well after lots of training and thankfully only some minor injuries, the date arrived for Ironman canada 2012. Tony picked it because it was close enough to drive to and it had a single loop bike course. perhaps he didn't realize it was one of the hilliest bike courses out there. when we drove it (which took over two hours) i could hear the car dropping gears - some 12% grades! the drive up took most of the day thursday, so we missed the kids fun run, but had time to check into the hotel, check out the lakefront, and play in the pools (indoor and outdoor pools) in the hotel. the whole town was packed with competitors and families - lots of bikes! the penticton valley is quite pretty - lots of fruit/vineyard and lakes. the picture of kaitlyn here is at the lake on friday - thank goodness the wind wasn't like this on sunday - ironman day!

we did a lot of walking and sometimes matt refused - more exercise for me

on the official competitor list, checking in friday.

cupcakes!

had to try some canadian fast food. breakfast and donut place that also had sandwhiches etc - they had egg salad - which kaitlyn and i liked!

spent lots of time here

day before competition on saturday. looking toward start line.

sunday morning - they started at 7am. we got up before 5 to drive tony to the start line, then back to bed and about 6:30am walked to the beach to watch the start. we weren't too close and couldn't see much other than choppy water, but we could hear the announcer well.

breakfast on the beach - i convinced them to stay and wait for daddy to finish the swim

tony finishing - i could tell it was him because as soon as he stood up he was mincing up to the sand (tony has very tender feet and hates going barefoot!) i was pretty sure i had him picked out then when he went through the announcer said his name so i knew i was right! we walked down and watched him start off on the bike. they had tons of people helping so his transition time was pretty quick.

at the fun park while dady spent 6 hours on the bike

the field full of transition bags

ice cream after lunch while waiting for daddy to finish on the bike

we managed to catch him finishing, but he was going to fast for me to get a picture

headed out on the marathon course

the kids and i went back to the hotel and swam, then returned to watch tony finish.

a little tired after 2.4mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run! walked partway back to the hotel then he hung out with the kids while i went to get the car.

the day after - skate park near our hotel.

2 days later, headed home - tony with his reward - a coke slurpee! (good thing they have 7-11's in canada)

stopped in leavenworth just to see it on the way home.

we got stopped for rock blasting on i-90 for over an hour on the way home. luckily matt had his guys and he remained entertained!

official ironman pictures - early in the bike

swim course in lower left you can see the swimmers behind the start line - they swim all the way to the other side of the lake, down and then back.

Finish! Tony beat the swim and bike times he had as goals, so i made sure the kids and i got to the finish plenty early just in case. when he hadn't arrived in 20 minutes, matt kept saying "he's late!" but i think he had a great time!
